To look for a needle in a haystack basically means to look for something difficult or impossible to find. Ever wonder why the person does not just buy another needle?
Sometimes people are so consumed with a particular task that they forget the purpose of the task in the first place. For example, if a person needs a needle for patching up clothes (so happen I am actually doing some simple needle work for my office skirt), and accidentally drops that needle in a haystack (imaginary one), and spends a whole day looking for that particular needle.... in actual fact it would be much better to just go find another needle is it not (I have a whole box of them)? Kinda reminds me of this story of an American tourist and a Mexican fisherman.
If you have an end in mind, the goal might not be as far off as you think. Of course realistically, the Mexican fisherman should have more resources that just enough to meet the family needs so that the family will have enough for rainy days. So think about it, does that new car serve your ultimate life's goal? How about that new branded bag that could feed a few families for a month? Come to think about it, what is your purpose in life?
