The world of academics is such that they need proof or verification for everything that is written. Basically means referencing your work well and giving credit to those who have said it before. It is all good and well if I read those work then use it. But sometimes, somethings are just plain common sense yet have to go find people who support them in good rating journals (not all journals are reliable I was told) in order to write them in my reports. What about things that we were taught in class that is not from a book? Go search for someone who validate that fact? But in that case, we are merely searching for people who support our ideas, nothing about those who oppose. Where's the objectiveness in that?
For the purpose academic fine. But then there are some people that take it too far. Even in everyday life, there are comments such as "please find a journal that can prove that to me". I do not need a journal to know that it is good habit or more efficient/effective to be punctual for things. Perhaps, in teaching the students how to think, they end up not thinking at all. It is like the mind is water frozen in the shape of the mould it is poured in.... instead of being the free flowing liquid that it is supposed to be (under normal conditions anyway ^^).....

thesis writing, yes we need citation. otherwise, your remarks and opinion or whatever you write are highly questionable. but to rely what right and wrong is in daily life... slap them please ^^

I use citation to trace back journals article. One of the articles, short paper or thesis contain references and I trace back this to make sure this author is reliable or not. E-mails help too.
If you like to contradict your own project, why you want to propose it at first?
However, in the end, the conclusion is based on your findings so you know best.
